柯律格《蕴秀之域:中国明代园林文化》评介

摘要:《蕴秀之域:中国明代园林文化》是英国学者柯律格阐释中国明代园林文化的一部著作。柯律格开创性地运用唯物主义历史观,倡始摆脱常规的时间线性叙述方式,重点揭示江南地区的造园活动和营建理念,深度探讨“园林”的多重内涵及其在社会网络中所扮演的重要角色。基于“物质文化”“视觉文化”研究的丰富经验,柯律格通过钩稽大量文本的视觉呈现,以文献中的地图、绘画和插图等形式来管窥明代园林的诸多面向。柯律格的研究理路和学术范式对当代世界研究中国艺术史、园林文化(尤其是对明代)具有肇造和革新之功,在学术史上亦具有重要的转捩意义。

Title: The Eyes of Exotic Lands and the Realm in the Garden: Take Craig’s Fruitful Sites: Garden Culture in Ming Dynasty China as the center

Abstract: Fruitful Sites: Garden Culture in Ming Dynasty China is a work by British scholar Craig on the interpretation of Chinese Landscape Culture in Ming Dynasty. Craig pioneered the use of materialistic view of history, advocated getting rid of the conventional linear narrative mode of time, and emphatically revealed the gardening activities and construction ideas in the south of the Yangtze River. This paper probes into the multiple connotations of “garden” and its important role in social network. Based on the rich experience of the study of “material culture” and “visual culture”, he peeped into many aspects of the garden in Ming Dynasty through the visual presentation of a large number of texts forms of maps, paintings and illustrations in the literature. Craig’s research theory and academic paradigm are of great significance to the study of Chinese art history and garden culture (especially in Ming Dynasty) in the contemporary world.
