Title: A Study of the Translation and Reception of Jin Ping Mei in the Spanish-Speaking World

Abstract: This article examines the translation and reception of the Ming-dynasty classic Jin Ping Mei in the Spanish-speaking world. It reviews the history of translations from early indirect excerpts to the simultaneous appearance of two complete translations in the 2010s, compares their strategies and paratexts, and analyzes media reviews, reader responses, and scholarly and educational receptions within the framework of translation and reception studies. The study identifies three phases: early experimentation, the arrival of complete translations, and diversified development. It argues that the combination of a faithful academic edition and a popularized rewrite enabled the novel to transition from a banned erotic book to a literary classic, enriching Spanish-language perceptions of Chinese fiction. The success of this cross-cultural transmission hinges on translators proficient in both cultures, high-quality annotations, and culturally open and supportive publishing environments. The Spanish translations of Jin Ping Mei have not only broadened the horizon of Chinese literature abroad but also contributed to the dialogue between Chinese classics and world literature.

Keywords: Jin Ping Mei; Spanish translation; reception studies; canonization; cross-cultural transmission
