Title: The Southward Transmission of Chinese Cultural Influence: An Introductory Analysis of Vietnamese Fu Written in Han Script
Abstract: For over a millennium, ancient Vietnam was incorporated into the Chinese dynastic map, functioning as an administrative region of China. Beginning in the Five Dynasties period, Vietnam achieved independence and established its own statehood, yet continued to maintain a suzerain-vassal relationship with China. Against this historical backdrop, various facets of Vietnamese culture were profoundly influenced by China; numerous literary genres of Chinese origin were successively transmitted southward and continued to evolve within Vietnam, including the Ci-Fu (rhapsody). The Fu genre was highly esteemed in Vietnam, playing a pivotal role in the selection and promotion of talent within the Imperial Examination system. Due to this long-standing and direct association with civil service examinations, the pragmatic and utilitarian style typical of “examination hall” literature permeated the composition of artistic Fu, establishing the ideal of jingshi zhiyong (statecraft and practical application) as a prevalent creative philosophy among Vietnamese Fu writers. Furthermore, the transmission of Fu to Vietnam involved a process of acculturation, resulting in the formation of distinct indigenous characteristics, which are most prominently manifested in works exploring historical themes.
