Title: English Translation Strategies as “Wins victory afar while sitting in tent”: A Review of Classical Chinese Literary Theories in the English-Speaking World: Translation and Transmission
Abstract: Wang Hongtao’s Classical Chinese Literary Theories in the English-speaking World: Translation and Transmission is a monograph that focuses on the dissemination of Chinese classical literary theory in the English-speaking world. This work contains four sections: foundational research, translation studies, dissemination&reception studies, and theoretical research. In chapter1, the foundational research section, the author clarifies core concepts such as “Chinese classical literary theory,” “translation and dissemination,” and “English-speaking countries,” and examines the historical development of the dissemination of Chinese classical literary theory in these regions. In chapter2, devoted to translation studies, is grounded in the source texts of Chinese classical literary theory and utilizes translation theories to compare and analyze different English translations. In chapter3, on dissemination and reception studies, presents empirical research based on survey results collected from 11 universities in English-speaking countries, examining the awareness, recognition, and translation strategies related to Chinese classical literary theory. In chapter4, on theoretical research, builds upon the preceding chapters to explore theoretical reflections on the translation and dissemination of Chinese classical literary theory in the West, discussing its progression from “translation poetics” to “comparative poetics” and ultimately to “world poetics.” Author aims to provide historical insights, experiential references, and practical strategies for the future English translation and dissemination of Chinese classical literary theory in the West. The main theme of this book can be described as “wins victory afar while sitting in tent”.
