Editors-in-Chief Introduction

Professor Zhang Tao

Tao Zhang has been a Professor of Subject Didactics in the field of Chinese as a Foreign Language (ChaF) at the East Asian Seminar of Georg-August University Göttingen since October 2024. In her research and teaching, she focuses on various aspects of Chinese didactics and cultural mediation in language instruction. Previously, she worked at the universities of Chongqing, Tübingen, and Heidelberg, where she taught and conducted research in German as a Foreign Language (DaF), German and Chinese-language film, Chinese as a Foreign Language (from beginner to advanced levels), and the use of film in ChaF didactics.

She completed her PhD in 2016 at the German Seminar and the Institute of Media Studies at the University of Tübingen, also taking courses in Sinology. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in German Studies, which included components of Sinology, in 2005 from Beijing International Studies University, and her Master’s degree in Film Studies in 2008 from Beijing Film Academy.

In addition to her university teaching and research experience, she has diverse additional qualifications and extensive teaching experience in language instruction (DaF/DaZ, ChaF, and Chinese as a heritage language) at various educational institutions, including Global IELTS School Beijing, Goethe Institute Language Center Chongqing, Deutsche Angestellten-Akademie Reutlingen, Volkshochschule Tübingen, and Chinese Language School Stuttgart. She also brings extensive examination experience, including at Telc and the Goethe-Institut.
Her research focus lies on the cultural dimension of language teaching, particularly in intercultural studies related to teaching Chinese and German. She investigates the use of media in foreign language didactics for Chinese and integrates film-related and intercultural elements to promote linguistic and cultural sensitivity. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of multilingualism for global communication, especially in the context of Global Chinese and its varieties. She is actively committed to the continuous development of her teaching methods and promotes knowledge transfer through lectures, workshops, and film screenings that explore innovative approaches to utilizing literature, film, music, and other audiovisual media in the instruction of Chinese language and culture.

 

Professor PARK Jae-woo

PARK Jae-woo, a native of Gimje, South Korea, currently serves as a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences of Shaanxi Normal University, a Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor of the Ministry of Education of China, and an Honorary Professor and PhD Supervisor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He also holds concurrent positions as President of the Korean Association of World Chinese Language Literature, President of the International Lu Xun Research Association, and Chairman of the World Sinology Research Association (Macao). As a renowned sinologist, essayist, and translator, he has dedicated over four decades to the teaching and research of Chinese literature from ancient to modern times, making outstanding contributions to Lu Xun studies, overseas Chinese literature research, and literary exchanges between South Korea and China.

His contributions to international sinology and Lu Xun studies are particularly notable: as a core leader of the International Lu Xun Research Association, he has built an academic dialogue platform for Lu Xun studies between China, South Korea and the global academic community. By organizing international conferences and editing thematic collections, he has advanced the in-depth dissemination and cross-cultural interpretation of Lu Xun’s ideas overseas. His works such as Selected Studies on Lu Xun in South Korea systematically trace the century-long development of Lu Xun studies in the Korean academic circle, providing a critical text for the international sinological community to understand Lu Xun in the East Asian context. Additionally, through translating works like Selected Works of Prominent Chinese Scholars on Lu Xun Studies, he has facilitated the mutual translation and in-depth exchange of academic achievements between China and South Korea, significantly enhancing the international visibility of Chinese literature and Lu Xun studies, and establishing himself as a vital bridge connecting sinological research between the two countries.

He has published more than 20 academic works, including Selected Studies on Lu Xun in South Korea, over 100 academic papers, and has edited and translated multiple works such as Selected Works of Prominent Chinese Scholars on Lu Xun Studies. His academic achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Excellent Academic Award from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the "China-ROK Friendship Merit Award" from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Korea, the "Friend of Chinese Literature" title from the Chinese Writers Association, and the highest education medal awarded by the President of South Korea.
